Description
Product Description Beautiful to behold and impossible to forget, The Pillow Book is auteur Peter Greenaway's erotically-charged homage to the art of calligraphy and the indelible nature of even our earliest memories. As a young girl, Nagiko (Vivan Wu) became her father's canvas each year on her birthday, as he'd paint on her face and neck the creation myth in elaborate, elegant calligraphy. As a young woman, she finds pleasure in continuing the practice with a succession of lovers, particularly a bisexual translator (Ewan McGregor) who becomes a pawn in an escalating game of revenge on the publisher who once exploited her beloved father's hard work. First saw this film in the theater and was very impressed with it. Happily this version is not cropped "formatted to fit your tv". It is pillar boxed but keeps the original film aspect or as close as possible within the pillars. This film is highly dependent on aspect ratio so very important in this case. There is much overlapping and fading in and out done before digital film making I imagine. Strange but interesting love story about two people obsessed with calligraphy, writing and literature. Definitely an art house kind of film. Be aware there is much nudity, mostly male, throughout film.
